Whether you’ve been married for less than five years or more than 20, you and your spouse have no doubt encountered challenges in your relationship. If you have children, you might relate to many Missouri parents who have had spousal disagreements over parenting issues. Perhaps your relationship has been put to the test regarding financial issues. Numerous factors can strain a marriage, and data shows that one’s “profession” is one of them. Depending on the type of jobs you and your partner have, you may be less or more likely to divorce.

Interestingly, analyses show that married couples in higher-level income brackets reportedly file for divorce a lot less often than spouses in lower income categories. This doesn’t necessarily mean that, if you have a certain amount of money, you’re guaranteed not to divorce. However, evidence shows that spouses who endure greater financial strain seem to file for divorce at a higher rate than couples who have a higher net worth. There are six professions that carry a higher divorce rate than most others.

Careers that rank in the top 10 for divorce

Numerous issues, events and relationship dynamics can affect your marriage. Having a particular job does not provide 100% certainty that you will or will not divorce your spouse someday. However, the following list includes six career categories that consistently rank in the top 10 for the highest divorce rates in Missouri and across the country:

  • Professional athletes
  • Entertainers
  • Flight attendants
  • Telemarketers
  • Bartenders
  • Massage therapists

Data shows that people who work in these industries file for divorce more often than other types of professions. Some analysts say that these groups have some things in common. For example, flight attendants, athletes and entertainers typically must travel a lot and are not always able to take their families on the road. This can place a tremendous strain on a marriage.

Thinking of filing for a divorce?

Regardless what industry you or your spouse work in, how long you’ve been married or what exact problems you’ve experienced in your relationship, if you’re thinking of filing for a divorce in Missouri, support is available to help you and your children navigate the system and cope with the changes that a decision to file can cause in your daily life. Many communities have family support groups, which can be especially helpful for those who are experiencing divorce for the first time.

You can also tap into local resources to assist you in other matters, such as finance or legal issues. It’s best to learn as much as you can before proceedings regarding child custody laws, child support, property division, spousal support and other relevant topics. With a strong support network in place, you’ll be able to achieve a fair settlement and provide your children with the emotional support they need to be able to come to terms with your divorce and move on in life in the least stressful way possible.
