How to cope with the overwhelming stress of divorce

On Behalf of | Sep 3, 2021 | Divorce |

It goes without saying that a marital breakup can be one of life’s most challenging experiences. During a divorce, difficult emotions may build up and leave a person feeling stressed and absolutely overwhelmed. Negative emotions and stress must be properly dealt with in order for a person to move past them. For those in Missouri experiencing divorce, the following strategies could be helpful when it comes to dealing with overwhelming stress.

Exercise

Exercise is one of the absolute best ways to ward off anxiety and relieve stress. Exercise has been scientifically shown to reduce levels of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. To combat stress during divorce, keep a regular exercise routine and stay as active as possible.

Feel emotions

No one wants to deal with difficult emotions, so it is common to try and run from them. To process negative emotions, a person must first allow themselves to feel them. Never try to self-medicate or numb these emotions with drugs or alcohol. Instead, go through the grieving process and it will be easier to move on.

Make time for fun

As the saying goes, laughter is the best medicine. Plan activities that are fun and participate in them often. It may be tempting to stay in isolation, but get out as much as possible. Visit with close friends and socialize regularly.

As time goes on, things will get easier. During this confusing time, it is recommended to seek legal guidance. Those in Missouri who are going through divorce may want to consider discussing their situation with a legal representative. An experienced and knowledgeable family law attorney can answer questions and provide much-needed legal guidance.
