Preparing for a divorce

On Behalf of | Aug 3, 2018 | Divorce |

The unfortunate truth is that some marriages were never meant to be. When Missouri spouses come to this realization, divorce is generally the best solution. Most couples go into the divorce process hoping for a smooth transition. However, emotions often run high when issues such as child custody and property division come into play. That’s why it’s important to be prepared.

If you feel that your divorce could get messy, the first step is to find a competent divorce lawyer. An experienced attorney can help ensure your rights aren’t overlooked during the course of the proceedings. Ultimately, legal counsel could help you obtain a fair separation agreement.

While it’s always preferable that you’re able to get along with your soon-to-be ex, don’t try to be friends too soon. What you need now is space. If you were married for many years, you may also need to reestablish financial accounts and relationships with your children. When it comes to issues like parenting, assets and finances, make sure you get everything down in writing.

Speaking of parenting, it’s critical to create a visitation schedule that works for everyone in the family. Remember, your kids love you and your spouse, and it’s important that you do what’s necessary to help them understand that the divorce is not their fault. It’s normal for serious debate to arise when it comes to the kids, and that’s when your attorney can act as a mediator to take an unbiased look at the circumstances.
